Tickling - Types, Description and Uses

Can you tickle yourself? You must be really amazed by the fact that you can't tickle yourself. It is true due to some neurology facts and foundations laid by some neurology institutions.

But why can you tickle your skin, palm and feet soles?

Well there are two types of tickling methods: First one is to gently rub or touch your fingers on skin and second one is to hold any part of the body.
But you can tickle yourself the first type while not the second!

Brain responses painfully in terms of laughter

Like I described above giving Neurology as a keyword to the answer to this question. Our brain has two parts, the left side and the right side. Both the sides control the different parts of body and the way of thinking either to think as an optimist or pessimist.

Both these parts have different sub-parts to control the whole body just like a computer's CPU has.
Different parts of brainThe Cerebellum is the main part of brain which is responsible for quick actions and for self defence of body, so its kind of very active part. You can see in the pic where the cerebellum is!

Lets make it more broad, it is obvious that you won't hurt yourself for any reason (suicide is another thing, its a mental problem) so definitely your brain does not find any sense of danger to your body but if someone touches you or hold your part of body, it tickles, because now brain senses a danger and this pain is in form of laughter!

Tickle Torture

Image depicting the Chinese history of tickle tortureWhen usage of human tickling sensation is for abusing, humiliating, or pranking puposes; this type of tickling is known as Tickle Torture. As the brain responses to this painful sensation in terms of laughter, this irritates the human body and sometimes victim may feel dominated by torturer. Although this torture is harmless to human body but is equally unpleasant for the victim.

For some people, who have better responsive brain reflexes may often feel as if nothing is going on as their brain is capable enough to cope with the situation that human body is going to face or is currently facing.

Therefore, tickle torture might be used for simple interrogation with the criminal or the suspect, as it does not impose any harm to their body. It just makes them feel in a very unplesant situation.

Chinese in ancient times used this method to interrogate with the suspect in the courts of Han Dynasty. This is better known as Chinese Tickle Torture.

Look at this pic, what do you see? A person's feet are tied up and second person is tickling feet soles.

Another example of tickle torture was used in ancient Rome, where a person’s feet were dipped in a salt solution, and a goat was brought in to lick the solution off. This type of tickle torture would only start as tickling, eventually becoming extremely painful and intolerable.
